This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever seen the joy of a student who cannot read being able to finish a book? My students that come to the resource room are usually 2 levels behind their own classroom and don't get the chance to shine. When given a book with low level and high interest they look forward to reading.
The students in my resource room are children diagnosed with a learning disability, attention deficit disorder or a combination of both.
They range in age from 6-12. Many have been retained at least once, some twice. In my room it can be the first time they feel success and aren't afraid to show what they don't know.
My Project
The students in the resource room not only need level books to enjoy, but also improve their word recognition, fluency and comprehension. Using a Sony digital recorder they can hear themselves read and this also will encourage them to try their best. Many of my students don't have the resources to read at home, and with a checkout system they can take the books and share with their parents how much progress they have made. This will build their self-confidence.
The students in my room have had so many failures in their short school career.
By offering them a way to succeed and build their self-confidence, they will increase their chance of success. We receive very little funding from our state and I am grateful for any help my students can receive.
