Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Children are not reading for fun anymore. How do we change that? I think we have to make reading fun! Not just boring worksheets to respond to what they are reading, but making the latest technology available for them to complete their own projects.

I work in an area of low economic development.

A majority of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch and also come from homes where English is not the primary language. They are very eager to learn and love when we can make learning fun for them. I facilitate for a book club that meets after school each week and students have a list of required books to read. We read those books and discuss the plots and characters. Sometimes they get very excited about certain titles and want to do more to advertise those books to the rest of the group. This project would make books available for them to check out. There is nothing like watching a group of kids leaving school with their noses in their books!

My Project

The mp3 players and camera would allow the students to respond to what they are reading by making book trailers, PSA's for the favorite causes of characters, and record themselves reading to improve their own fluency. We could show these videos and presentations that the kids make on the school-wide morning announcements and reach even more students! I am also asking for books from some of their favorite authors to help peak that interest in reading. Often our students don't have regular access to books that they can read-this donation could remedy that issue. We could put books in the hands of every student as they go home at night.

This donation would help us instill a passion for reading in our students!

If we can get them excited about not only what they are reading but how they are responding to it, maybe it will be a skill that will continue to grow as they do. This donation would give access to reading resources and technology that these kiddos haven't had access to before. Reading is such an important skill-it's the foundation for all other subject areas. You could help us set that foundation for many, many students!
