Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

One of the most difficult parts of teaching reading to my emergent, special education readers is teaching them how to make reading a habit. Many of my students have been non-readers for so long that they dont even attempt to read things that they have the skills to read. My students have to be very interested, motivated and curious to pick something up and choose to read it. This is exactly what takes for a struggling reader to become an independent reader. To aid this transition, I would like to develop a current magazine library that covers a variety of topics. To do this, we will need subscriptions to as many high interest magazines as possible. We will also need a stand on which to display them and magazine covers to differentiate current editions from past editions. The great part about magazines is that students will have an ever-changing supply of current topic to be tempted by. Also, as the magazines become old issues, they can be given to students to take home or use in projects. Lastly, my hope is that this broad range of reading material will help to build the students general knowledge in a way that will support all of the students' academic endeavors.
