This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students and I are in an inner-city, immigrant neighborhood in Queens, New York. We are a Title One school where English is the second language.
My students come from various countries and we enjoy learning about each other.
They work very hard and are super eager to learn. I also enjoy helping their parents, who have little or limited English, the same way teachers helped me and my parents when I first came to second grade.
My Project
My students are English Language Learners who are new to this country or had their school years interrupted by the pandemic. Therefore, these students need a lot of extra help feeling confident that they can read in order for them to fall in love with books. I choose books that my students can relate to. These books are for group work and direct instruction at students' reading level.
The goal is to get my students to see themselves as readers!
When we read books together, students can take them home and proudly read to their families.
