My Students
Intertwined in my classroom are students who come with various learning and developmental disabilities. I am a fifth grade self-contained educator in Brooklyn, NY. Throughout our academic day, my students are continuously on a journey building their knowledge and comprehension skills in all academic areas. In using hands on STEM activities and constructing engaging academic tasks, my students come in everyday motivated to learn new things.
All of the students in my classroom come from diverse socioeconomic environments, but despite this minor setback all of my students show in their own unique way a passion for learning.
As they grow as a community of learners, it is essential for them to be provided with engaging content and educational tools that will help them grow academically.
As a teacher, they have taught me how to be diverse in my instruction, as it is required of me to help them with their individual needs. It is my goal to give them everything they need to continue on their path towards academic success.
My Project
Every one of my students has shown that they are striving to learn new strategies in order to advance their reading capabilities in the classroom. In having these resources, I can utilize them throughout my small group instructional periods to really teach them how to think while they are reading.
I'm currently teaching my students that reading words on a page is half the task, understanding what we read, and thinking about our reading helps to paint the bigger picture of the story.
To have these resources, will help my students who are reading below grade level, and maximize critical instructional time. The use of the leveled practiced cards for various reading skills: cause and effect, main idea, etc., will help all my students, regardless of their reading levels, develop these skills that are impeding on their ability to fully comprehend the context of any story. Additionally, with the comprehension cubes will give a more interactive component to the learning process.
