My Students

My students are empowered, driven, and hard-working young women. As much as I want to wish that I can teach my students everything they need to know, I can't. That is where books come into play. I want my students to pick up a book and get lost in its pages.

My students attend an all-girls school in Queens, NY.

They are college and career-bound young women who are on a mission to break the stereotype of what it means to be a strong young woman of color. Most of my students all come from middle-class families, a few from low-class families, that support their choices and decisions. The mentality and mission of my school is to mold a young mind into a college-bound young woman who is ready to take on the world.

My Project

As the research shows, reading for 30 minutes a day can help students maintain their reading level, reading for an hour a day can help them jump reading levels. As an educator who has personally loved books my entire life, I want to incorporate independent reading instruction into my classes to give my students the opportunity to read and excel as young academics. My students need books that they can enjoy in class and at home, such as Shiver Trilogy Boxset, Brown Girl Dreaming, and I Am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World.

As an educator who has personally loved book my entire life, I want to show my young women the power that books can have on their lives and academics.

My young women will have access to titles that they have self-selected to participate in our independent reading time.
