My Project
The community service project by the Equity Club at our school aims to increase literacy among young students by empowering high school students to read diverse literature during a field trip to local elementary schools in South Ozone, Queens. This single event will create a meaningful impact not only on the elementary students but also on their families and the broader community.
By introducing younger students to a variety of age-appropriate, diverse books, our high school students will foster a love for reading and enhance self-esteem through representation.
This exposure will help elementary students see themselves in the stories, cultivating a sense of belonging and encouraging them to embrace their identities. For families, witnessing their children engage with high school role models can strengthen the community’s support for education and literacy.
The event will also serve as a bridge between generations, allowing high school students to share their enthusiasm for reading while modeling positive behaviors. As they read aloud, they will inspire elementary students and create a vibrant, interactive atmosphere that emphasizes the importance of literacy. This moment will resonate beyond the classroom, encouraging families to foster reading habits at home.
Furthermore, the impact of this community service project extends to the surrounding neighborhood by promoting cultural understanding and empathy among diverse groups. By connecting high school students with younger learners and their families, we aim to create a sense of unity and shared purpose within the community, highlighting the value of education and the importance of inclusive representation. Overall, this initiative will cultivate a culture of reading that benefits not just the students involved but also enriches the entire South Ozone community.
