Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
For most of my children, this is their first experience being away from home and being separated from their families. Being away from home is difficult for most students but compounded with the pandemic, it can be a traumatic experience, none the less they come to school each day, full of energy, curiosity, excited to be here and ready to learn and play! To them, school is a place where they feel safe, loved, and valued. This difficult transition is also affected by their already existing life circumstances.
Our children come from low-income households and receive free breakfast and lunch.
With your help, you can give them the tools necessary to become our future leaders that understand, honor and celebrate all people!
My Project
Dr. Rudine Sims describes books as "mirrors and windows”. Windows that allow children to see the lives and experiences of people who are different from them, and mirrors to allow children from marginalized groups to see their own lives, culture, and experiences reflected in the books they read.
Today more than ever before, it is crucial for our students to develop the empathy that comes from seeing the world from others' perspectives.
This picture book library will serve to provide my students with the windows and mirrors they need to form a deeper understanding of the world and acceptance of those whose lives differ from their own.
Titles have been carefully selected that are written and/or illustrated by authors and artists whose lived experiences match those depicted in the story.
Giving my students windows and mirrors through the books we read will help us understand others, understand ourselves, and spark deep conversations that grow our classroom community closer than ever.
