My Students
As a teacher, in high poverty school district, my students are faced with many obstacles both in and out of school. My students struggle with homelessness, hunger, and many other hardships. All of my students are currently reading below their grade level and struggle in their academic classes on a daily basis. My students come to me knowing they have difficulty in reading and it can emotionally take a toll on their self-esteem. The students are constantly working towards closing the gap and becoming on grade level readers.
Reading is the foundation of all learning!
My students come to me reading 5 to 6 years behind their current grade level. The students home life can interfere with their learning.
My students have many burdens to deal with and then there is reading, these kids need help in reading and this is a goal I have taken to heart. In the past 5 years, 100% of my students have made 1-3 year gains at the middle school level and I would like to continue the success with my current and future students.
My Project
Story works and Action Magazine from Scholastic will allow the students a resource that is leveled and differentiated, which will give the students an opportunity to read and comprehend at their instructional reading level. The magazine will give the students a chance to experience different genres and methods of reading different types of texts.
The donations for this project will help to improve my students' overall comprehension, which will help them progress in all their academic classes.
Lastly, having these magazines will allow students a rich and authentic reading experience, which will continue to close the gaps in their reading.
