Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My English students this year are leaders in many different ways. Most importantly, they have a deep sense of what's right and wrong in the world and the importance of being allies. From day one, students have modeled honesty and vulnerability in my classroom, encouraging their peers and sharing personal stories.
My students willingly speak up, not only on behalf of themselves, but on behalf of others.
The diversity at our 2,800-student public high school allows a safe space for empathy and meaningful opportunities for advocacy. We are racially, socio-economically, religiously, and linguistically diverse. My students are Latino/a, Chinese American, Vietnamese American, African American, Filipino American, and white American. I have students from both middle-class and low-income families sitting shoulder-to-shoulder daily-- the same goes with different religious backgrounds and first/home languages.
SLHS is south of Oakland and north of Hayward, Ca. It's a city with a rough history of racial discrimination and a stronger future of inclusion. Students are athletically talented (Div 1 school) and a large population are college-bound.
My Project
My 10th grade English students will each get their own copy of The 57 Bus by Dashka Slater to read in class and at home. Last year, my students read it for the first time and they loved it! It's local to Oakland, and it's a nuanced perspective on race and the juvenile justice system. It's also very informative about the LGBTQ community.
Our goal is for the 10th grade curriculum at our school to reflect the backgrounds, cultures, and interests of our students.
This book achieves our goal. We need more copies of The 57 Bus so that all classes of 10th graders at our large public high school can participate. Let's encourage reading and community building!
