My Students

When you get ready to read a book where do you go? Do you head for a straight back chair with no cushion or do you try to find a comfortable spot? I want my students to have room to find that comfortable spot plus be ready for group projects and small group work with me. What's the solution? Tables.

I teach at a large, rural low country school.

Most all of my students come from a low socioeconomic background receiving free or reduced priced lunch. My students come to school with many challenges. In our best efforts to meet their needs we are working towards High Progress Literacy classrooms. High Progress Literacy research states that highly engaged readers from homes with less reading materials showed higher success in reading that less engaged readers from homes with more materials.

My Project

High Progress Literacy goals state that 100% of students should be actively engaged in appropriate challenging text for 75% of the time in order to learn content. I plan on using the Daily 5 to help create a HPL classroom. The tables will serve DOUBLE duty. They will free up floor space for students finding cozy spots to read and write independently, plus it is convenient for group work such as discussing and sharing texts and taking dash notes. Also for small group instruction I can rotate around to the group's table instead of having a separate table. The Daily 5 incorporates a "gathering place" on the carpet for focus lessons. Right now, student desks take up too much space to incorporate everything and still have room to breathe.

This project will improve the flow of my classroom throughout the day with the Daily 5 routine.

It will help us be organized and give us space for everything we need. Creating an effective High Progress Literacy classroom using the Daily 5 will increase my students' reading and content area success. The tables will help create a better overall atmosphere for learning in the room.
