This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are curious learners who have become detectives while reading! "What does this mean?" you may ask.... Well let me explain! Being a detective while reading a story is so important for 3rd graders because we cover so many standards and skills in 3rd grade! Becoming a detective helps readers

I teach at a Title I school, where everyone receives free breakfast, and over 75% of our students receive free lunch.

Many of my students do not have books at home for them to read, so focusing of ways to become good readers in class is so important!

My Project

In class, while we are reading new texts each week, we use the Close Reading strategies. These strategies are Check for unknown words, Look for key ideas and the author's purpose, Observe features of literature, Study the structure of the text, and Examine the illustrations. We call these strategies "Detective Work"!

During our Close Reading time, my students utilize sticky notes to take notes on each strategy.

We also utilize a timer for this activity because the students need to be timely in their "detective work". I utilize our smart board to show highlighting, markings, and notes on a copy of the text that we are going over for the week. Having a presentation pointer will be very helpful for this as well, as I walk around the classroom and monitor what students are doing.

This project will help my students to continue being detectives as they read and practice their skills!
