Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class of 23 diverse, urban kindergarten students live below the poverty line and are predominately English language learners who have not attended preschool. Our school also has an on-site after school program for grades K-5.
In the past few years, our test scores have improved in all areas except for reading comprehension. Our second language learners struggle to understand abstract test questions and lack the academic vocabulary necessary to do well on standardized comprehension tests.
I recently discovered that there are a variety of engaging reading comprehension games available. These games provide reading experiences and focus on comprehension skills such as main idea, summarizing and details. The games provide exciting races, pirate adventures, and bingo while reinforcing essential reading comprehension skills.
Your generosity can place these reading comprehension games into the hands of students who need extra experience and practice to succeed to the best of their ability. You can make a difference!
