Reading Changes Your World

My Students

Muhammad Ali once said, "Impossible is not a fact, it is an opinion." My fourth graders know that this mindset is what it takes to do hard things like learning, growing, and overcoming obstacles in our lives. My students face obstacles every day, some before they even get to school. Obstacles such as many of them living at or below the poverty line, many are homeless or move frequently, most are receiving free or reduced lunch, and several students are English Language Learners and receiving additional resource services.

Despite all the obstacles in my students life they show up, they want to learn, and they put forth the effort to grow every day.

I want to teach my students to fight through obstacles, develop perseverance and resiliency, and do things they never thought they could.

My Project

Imagine a classroom library with a few unorganized books randomly placed on a wire shelf where the edges get bent and torn. Imagine a hard carpet floor with no padding to sit at. Imagine a student who already struggles to read and is a reluctant learner.

The oversized pillows and sturdy bookshelf will help create a comfortable, inviting, and organized reading area that students will want to go to and enjoy their next reading adventure in.

These donations to my classroom will make a significant impact on my student's willingness to read and success in finding a good book. I will have enough space to put all my books out, organize them by genre and reading level, and encourage students to sit and read during their choice time.
