My students need comfortable chairs for reading to replace our worn out old seating.

My Students
We have some voracious readers here and, though we are a progressive library, reading remains central to our work. Students engage with class assigned readings, sustained silent reading in study halls, and a school-wide summer reading program. Relaxing here with a book is a favorite past-time.
Our school supports a sense of civic pride and encourages student engagement.
I believe that the greatest thing about our student body is its civic-mindedness. Students are actively engaged in academic and social clubs, many of which design activities to benefit our relatively small community that serves rural, suburban and urban areas.
“We are a community” is our library motto. Students come to the library to work collaboratively on projects & homework, read, get support for research, use computers, create art, do jigsaw or word puzzles, play board games, craft, or engage in librarian created STEaM challenges. The library is the pulse of our school. Located at the physical center of the building, it is filled virtually all day, with teens engaged in activities throughout the room. The library fosters a vibrant learning community promoting a love for knowledge, respect for each other, and an appreciation of our diverse skills and passions.
My Project
Students love our beat up old leather chairs for their reading time. Sometimes they pull one of our library "mascot" stuffed animals off the shelves for company. Part of our reading mission is to match students with titles that will interest them and ignite their passions. Providing space for reading that encourages teens to associate reading with happiness is part of our strategy for supporting developing minds. Unfortunately, our leather chairs will not last much longer. The bottoms are falling out and the cushioning is limp. New bean bag chairs will replace the easy chairs as they fall apart and will provide more mobile reading opportunities, allowing students to find the perfect spot to curl up with a good book.
We do not have money for new chairs, yet I think it is important to provide furniture that makes students feel comfortable and welcome in our library.
New seating, built just for teens, will contribute to our goal of creating a space that helps ignite student passions. As they get lost in a book, I'd like my students to be hugged by a chair. I'd like to give them warm memories of literature, helping to make reading a lifelong endeavor.
