This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Every year I see so many wonderful students who are so shy about reading out loud in the classroom. Even with the increase in AI technology, I believe that simply reading out loud for enjoyment can greatly increase a student's fluency, and I want to give my kiddos a new way to do that. Across America, programs have been implemented in local animal shelters where students go and read to the animals, which benefits the animals with calmness and the students with a fun way to read out loud.
I plan to bring the "animal shelter" into my classroom with a series of weighted stuffed animals that will serve as reading buddies for my students, which will not only give them a fun way to practice reading (who wouldn't love reading to an animal) but also aiding in helping them remain calm and the weight of the animals provides a soothing affect!
These simple animals will help my students build their reading knowledge, fluency, confidence, and (for ESL students) their English language skills as well!
