Reading Buddies: Building Literacy and Relationship Skills!
Help me give my students the opportunity to become reading buddies with special ed students to encourage and develop literacy skills. The students will read and create crafts/projects for each book read together.
Reading Buddies is a program that we would like to start for our students. This would be an opportunity for regular education students to pair up with special education students and build literacy skills. Through this program, the students will have increased reading and listening opportunities for academic success. In addition, they will learn that personal relationships and face-to-face interaction can increase self-worth, improve communication skills, and the desire to help one another become successful.
Since COVID, it is evident that our students are lacking social skills from long periods of isolation.
This program will not only enhance their literacy skills but also help students improve their social skills by building relationships with their peers. The hope is for our students to gain interest in reading and helping others succeed. This program will offer weekly reading sessions with their peers followed by a partnered activity. The items we have requested will provide an organized way to reuse these materials for years to come. The book shelf will house the books in a systematic fashion. We have requested lower leveled books to meet the needs of our adaptive students and their skill level. After the buddies finish a book, they will create a task box activity using the craft supplies and storage bins. These task box activities can be reused by the entire adaptive class.
Our students are special in many ways. Middle school is a trying time for many kids. The feeling of being disconnected can feel overwhelming. This program provides an opportunity to help others develop literacy skills, provide a sense of accomplishment, build personal relationships, and increase self-esteem. Providing this experience for our students just might spark their interest in giving back to the community and building a better future for our youth.
