My Students

I have the privilege of working with the most wonderful children. They come to school prepared for learning and come with a positive attitude. They encourage one another, including me, in striving to become better in all that they do both inside and outside of the classroom. I am proud to call them my students and in knowing that they are leaders of tomorrow.

I have had the honor of teaching these children at 3 different grade levels.

5 years ago, I taught many of them in my kindergarten class, last year I taught them in 4th grade and this year I have been fortunate enough to loop with them as their teacher into the 5th grade. As their teacher for 3 different grade levels I have seen tremendous growth among these students in their social and academic abilities. I have witnessed how together, we set goals to achieve success in reading, writing, math and I have seen them work hard to demonstrate mastery in English and exit the English Language Development Program.

My Project

I am a true believer that in working together to develop fluent readers, my students have been able to accomplish as much as they have in the 3 years I have served as their teacher. Through reading they have learned to unlock bigger concepts, become critical and analytical thinkers and broadened their vocabulary usage. Many of my students have lists of favorite authors and often times try to mimic certain authors’ style in their writing and when communicating both informally and formally. My students love to read! This statement is not an exaggeration by any means. They have the stamina to read, read, and read until they have satisfied themselves for the time being. They look forward to independent reading time and to sharing about their reading with their partners. They also enjoy reading in book clubs and are having more deeper discussions about character traits, theme, and authors’ style of writing, main idea and detail, and cause and effect.

One of my goals for this year, is to encourage my students to develop their critical thinking skills when reading non-fiction text.

I also want to support my students in being college and career ready. I want them to have knowledge on how to use the necessary skills that one needs when approaching a textbook in science, math, social studies, political science, etc. My hope is that by the time I send my students off to middle school, high school, and college, they will demonstrate strength as analytical and critical thinkers in various genres.
