My students need a variety of books available to them in the classroom. They would really benefit from a great selection of themes and reading levels. It is essential for students to develop, encourage, and nourish as much as possible a love for reading.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Get Hooked on Reading" is what my Third Grade teacher encouraged me to do. I still cherish that idea. So a strong desire to read and learn is one of the main passions I want to inspire in my students. We work on this everyday: group reading, reading out loud, and twenty minutes reading at home.
The vast majority of our students are from a low income, working middle class community.
They are bright, energetic, and enthusiastic. Although most of the students have parents that work long hours that are more concerned with providing the everyday essentials and paying the bills, they enjoy a home life rich with a loving family that may also include siblings and supportive grandparents.
My Project
My first and second grade students unfortunately do not always have appropriate reading level books at home. I require 20 minutes minimum of appropriate level reading at home as part of the daily homework. I encourage the parents to actively participate in this portion of the homework by reading to their kids, having the kids read to them, and to then have conversations about what was read to maximize comprehension. Parents sometimes explain to me that they don't have appropriate reading materials at home, and that they may not have the time or ability to visit a local library to borrow these materials. I would love to build a small arsenal of books appropriate for my kids to not only use while in the classroom, but that they can borrow and take home overnite on a regular basis.
In closing, I would like to just reiterate what I've already mentioned.
That developing a strong reading foundation is just extremely important. Not just because it is a big part of the curriculum, but because it is the foundation for life-long learning. And at this early stage of their school years (first and second grades), it is essential to develop, encourage, and nourish as much as possible a love for reading. The materials I am requesting are to be used exactly for that end.
