My Students
Can you remember your parents reading to you as a child? Were weekly trips to the library routine? Did you have bookshelves filled with children's literature at your fingertips? If you answered yes, you were one of the lucky ones whose family made learning to read a natural part of your day!
Picture in your mind a class of 24 second grade students properly dressed in their red and black school uniforms sitting eagerly, bright eyed and ready to learn.
Belly's are full from the school provided breakfast, hands and faces washed at the classroom sink. Teeth often brushed at the hands of the nurse. Is this picture different then you can remember as an elementary student? Maybe so, but it a hard reality for my students. Intelligent, hard working, determined and fun can be used to describe my students. As well as economically challenged, struggling, and tired. My favorite word describing my class is READERS! They love to read!! Our school services a low economic, diverse population where teachers are often teaching the parents as well as the students. Families rely on the school system for support and rarely know how to support their children's education or their child's teachers. As dark as their home lives can get, they shine in the classroom displaying a love of learning.
My Project
Teaching young children is both rewarding and challenging. Teaching students who have little or no support at home is most challenging. These resources provide new and engaging books for students who'd otherwise not have new books to read. I'd be incorporating these resources in our daily guided reading groups as well as providing at home reading exercises for students and parents as I try to encourage a nightly reading routine at home! My students will benefit most from these new resources as they move from guided readers to independent readers. The activity books will both challenge and review key comprehension skills needed for reading success. In the end, I constantly strive to make reading fun for my students. It is my hope as I make this request that I continue to provide my students with new and engaging materials as they take their reading journey. A journey I hope lasts them a lifetime.
As a teacher I am constantly looking for ways to keep reading alive in my classroom.
With this project, I am able to provide new leveled readers for every student in my classroom. My students enjoy reading as I dedicate every morning to small group guided reading for every student, on every level, everyday! These resources also provide a sense of independence as they can work through the readers and activities that follow on their own. New resources helps build strong, confident lifelong readers.
