Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember how it felt to be read to? To let your mind build pictures, colors, and characters while your teacher, father, brother, or grandmother read the words out loud? Not only is hearing a story read aloud a wonderful experience, it is one of the key ways that young learners build their vocabulary. For this reason, my kindergarten students have a daily home reading requirement—every child should be read to for 10-20 minutes each day.
Frequently children return to school with a book from our classroom library to tell me that, “my parents can’t read me this book!” We need more books in our classroom library that all of my students’ families can read. The parents of my students are involved and conscientious. They want to work with their children at home. However, 16 out of 21 of my students’ families speak and read more Spanish than English and a few have difficulty reading and writing in either language.
Providing books for my kindergarten students to read at home is a top priority for me. Because I teach in a high poverty school many of my students do not have their own books at home.
I would like to create two new book bins in my classroom library. One bin will contain engaging stories written in English and Spanish. These books will allow parents to read in the language that they feel most comfortable with. Some bilingual parents might even choose to read the book twice to their children—once in English and again in Spanish. Research shows that reading at home in any language helps to build literacy. The other bin will contain beautifully illustrated books without words. Parents with limited literacy skills can create a story while sharing the pictures with their children. My students just completed a unit on wordless books, so I know they will enjoy sharing their talents as wordless book readers with their families.
With your help I can tell my students that they CAN take home their book of choice and that their families CAN read it to them. These books will help my students to become readers and their families to be the confident teachers that they want to be.
