Reading at Home: Engaging Families of Students With Autism

My students need books to welcome them to their new classroom!

My Students

Our class is comprised of 8 amazing students with autism across three grade levels who learn in many different ways. Our students come from different wards from within DC, not just from the surrounding neighborhood. Our class is a self-contained classroom, which means that the majority of each students' learning takes place within our room. Many of our students also receive some instruction in the general education setting and are able to interact and socialize with their typically developing peers throughout the day.

Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way our students interact and communicate with others.

Autism is a spectrum disorder and our students' skills and abilities fall all over the range of the spectrum. We have students who are approaching grade level academically as well as students who are not yet communicating verbally. Each of our students is unique and has their own strengths, gifts, and support needs. All of our students need support in the areas of communication, behavior, social interaction, and daily living skills.

My Project

Family engagement is an extremely important piece of a child's education, especially children with special needs. The more families are involved, the more invested they can be in their child's progress and learning while in the classroom.

Before each school year, we go on home visits during the summer to welcome our students and families to our school, both old and new.

We are requesting materials that we can take with us on these home visits to start the family-school relationship on a positive note and to help us show that family support is an important piece of the puzzle.

The books requested will not only excite each student for the school year ahead, but will assist in helping families practice many of the skills they can work with their children on at home. Reading each night to their child is an easy way to carryover skills from the school day to their home life.
