My students need a large rug so all students can fit during discussions/lessons, some comfy pillows to use when reading independently, and novels we can read as a class.
Do you remember sitting on the carpet listening to the read aloud or discussing the story you just read? My students love sitting on the carpet for reading time. Sadly, the carpet we have now isn't big enough for everyone and some students have to sit on the dirty floor. We want to change that!
My students are a very active group of 4th graders who like to be involved in the learning process.
We do our best learning on the rug, where we can sit and discuss the stories we are reading as well as practice our reading skills and strategies. But we would be able to focus more if we didn't have to worry about what that weird stain is from.
My Project
We are looking for a larger area rug so we don't have to have any of the students sitting on the dirty carpet that covers the floor. At the beginning of the year, I brought in a small rug for the students, but it is not nearly large enough for the class and is not sturdy enough to make it through the rest of the year.
We are also looking for some classroom resources to use while we are reading on the carpet. Colorful graphic organizers we can write on will be really helpful to my class of visual learners to keep track of what we are focusing on. The class sets of novels will give us grade appropriate chapter books to read together.
The rug will also help us build our independent reading skills and stamina. We will be able to stretch out and enjoy the book instead of sitting "criss-cross applesauce". By adding comfy reading pillows to our rug area, any student who can't fit on our new larger rug can use a reading pillow to get comfortable for independent reading time.
Having these additions will help the students during reading.
My class will greatly appreciate the colorful graphic organizers and new novels to read together. The rug and pillows will help them to be more comfortable when reading. By being more comfortable, they will be able to focus more on our lesson. The students already come to school with so much on their minds, it will be great to eliminate the worry about the mysterious stain they are sitting next to.
