My Students

I teach in a special education classroom in a Title I school in Georgia. Our whole school receives free breakfast and lunch. In my classroom, I serve students with a range of disabilities, such as learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, autism and ADHD. Many of my students come from single parent low income homes. Not only do they face challenges outside of school, but the majority of my students face significant academic challenges. Most of them are at least two grade levels behind where they should be.

Regardless of all of these circumstances, my students are resilient.

They come to school every day with a smile on their face, and eager to learn. They are energetic, and creative in more ways than I can explain. As their teacher, I want to provide them with every learning opportunity possible. I am always looking for ways to inspire and ignite curiosity in them. I focus on student potential and growth, and never on deficits. They truly inspire me to be the best teacher I can be.

My Project

The materials I am requesting for my students are iPads and maintenance items for the iPads. My students love technology. They love anything that is different from just pen and paper. These iPads would motivate and encourage them to explore reading and writing. It would give them experience with using and applying current technology. There are so many amazing apps available for students, but right now we do not have access to them. My students have deficits in reading, and with current technology there are so many opportunities available for them.

With these iPads, my students will be able to access new and fun ways of working with words.

My students will use these iPads during whole group reading lessons, small group work, and independent reading. I will download books on them to read, and games for them to practice and refine their phonics skills. They will do research assignments and learn about careers for their future.
