Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am very lucky and proud to be implementing a new program called Reading Apprenticeship in my classroom. My school is in a low-income, urban area, and the students here have very few resources at their disposal, and many are achieving below their ability. The school's standardized test scores are among the lowest in the district.
My students are from a very low-income urban area in California. Unfortunately, there is very little budget for books. Our school is also struggling to raise test scores, so funding is even more restricted. For Reading Apprenticeship, students are asked to write in or on the texts they are given in order to respond in a thoughtful and meaningful way. It is not possible for students to respond in school textbooks for obvious reasons, so I am trying to purchase books for them to read and keep. This would enable them to read and write thoughtfully, without worrying about the school fining them for damages.
I will need a book for every student (I have 95) to read and keep. Each book will go to a student, who will read it and write all their thoughts and responses inside it. The teacher's handbook is so the teacher can create effective lesson plans to go along with the book. The audio recording is so that the students can listen to a recording of the story as they read and respond--the reading will go slower, allowing the students more time to respond in their texts. The Reading Apprenticeship program is research-based and designed to make students readers for life.
Your contribution will make reading at or above grade level a real possibility for my students, and will help ensure a fruitful education for them. Please help me fully implement the Reading Apprenticeship program in my classroom.
