Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are part of a diverse learning community in an urban area of the United States. They are labeled as Students With Disabilities and English Language Learners, but these labels do not define them. They are extremely motivated and passionate students.
They are filled with pride and joy when they succeed in school since they have often been told that they are failures.
They know that to succeed in school, and in the future, they must work hard to become better readers and writers. They show determination every day to master the skills necessary to be proficient in reading and writing. These skills will help them and their families to a higher quality of life in the future. This is the beginning of their pathway to becoming college and career ready members of society.
My Project
The requested materials are essential to the student's full participation in the reading and writing workshop program my school uses to teach ELA. Students keep track of their work using LOTS of Post It Notes! Post It note tracking systems are great for students with poor working memory to help guide them through more complex texts that they are expected to read in middle school. The special pens make it easier to write and do not smudge. These materials help the students access more complicated texts by helping them comprehend strategies to become better readers and writers. The students are also more engaged with the reading when they can jot down their ideas as they go. Later, these jots can easily be moved into their notebooks.
The intimate teaching in a centralized, comfortable location is essential when teaching skills to help students grow as readers and writers.
Bean bag chairs and rugs serve as a focal point of the meeting area where the most important teaching takes place. The chairs and rugs also serve as cozy places the students can go to while doing their independent reading. In reading and writing workshop our lessons begin everyday with a mini lesson. The meeting area serves as a place to teach skill specific strategies to help students become better readers and writers. Most of my students are below grade level proficiency.
After the mini lesson, the seating area can then be used by students to read their books. The choice of where to read and not to be confined to classroom desks, allows students to gain more independence over their own reading life. They also feel special and enjoy reading more when they are not told where and how to sit.
