My Students
"There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all." (Jacqueline Kennedy)
My fourth grade students are enthusiastic children who want to succeed. Many receive free or reduced lunch at our Title One school in New York City.
Many of the students in my class are former or current English language learners, as well as, students with disabilities; reading and American history are the most challenging subjects for them.
The Sign of the Beaver along with other nonfiction articles about the Penobscot people will help encourage our students to integrate information from two texts on the same topic in order to write and speak about the subject knowledgeably. This text will tie into our study of the Algonquians, Haudenosaunee, and Lenape. Additionally, the settings in the novel would allow for geography studies. Having this historical fiction text would provide them with the opportunity they need to succeed in these two curriculum areas!
The Sign of the Beaver is an award winning novel that was based on a factual story. The author chronicles the meeting of a 13 year old boy on his own for the summer in the 1700s with the Penobscot natives.
My Project
The Sign of the Beaver would be an excellent anchor text for our literacy studies. This text would be used in both whole class and small group reading situations where the students would then be expected to respond to common core aligned higher-order-thinking activities (such as, text dependent questions) both orally and in writing.
This novel will allow us to provide our students with the opportunity to engage in purposeful reading, to learn history and explore the fiction and nonfiction components of this text.
Children need texts that are educational, as well as, engaging. In order to promote reading in school and outside of school we need to foster a love of reading in each of our students.
The Sign of the Beaver educates in two curriculum areas and allows the children to compare and contrast fiction and nonfiction components.
Your contribution and generosity will be well appreciated and well utilized.
We will be sure to make the most of this text in our instruction so that our students benefit in countless ways from your generosity. We look forward to updating you on their progress and enjoyment of this novel. Thank you so much in advance for your support and interest in helping our students achieve academic success!
