Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Sixth grade is an interesting year in a tween's development. They're still young enough to be very impressionable, but they're old enough to start questioning the world around them. It's a year they explore who they are and who they want to be.
Books that represent characters of all types (race, religion, gender identity, differently able) are one of the ways students this age can explore their own worlds as well as the world around them.
Sixth grade is also a critical year for building literacy skills. The more we can engage kids in reading, the stronger their reading and writing skills become. Books that are interesting/exciting/engaging are key to getting kids to read more.
Our school is diverse in many ways, but students don't know much about each other's lives. We encourage them to learn about and understand each other's unique perspectives/traditions/values. Inclusive libraries are one access point for engaging in this exploration.
