Reading and Math for Muggles Who Want to Become Wizards!
Help me give my students Math Instant Learning Centers and TIME FOR KIDS® Nonfiction Readers in Spanish to take them beyond the walls of our classroom as we study, do math and read about different countries and communities.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How many languages did you learn in elementary school? My students are currently learning how to read, write, and speak in English and Spanish in the Dual Language Immersion program.
Between my two classes, I have over 49 students who spend half of their day with me learning in Spanish and they spend the other half of the day in English.
In class, diversity is something that is valued. The students are engulfed in many different cultures and learn to understand and respect other ways of life. My students come from various parts of the world and a majority of them are learning English as a second language. Our school is a Title I school, which means many of the students come from low-income living situations. Over 90% of our school is on free or reduced-price lunch. However, these students don't let their background hold them back. They have a thirst for knowledge and want to make a better future for themselves.
My Project
Learning, not only academics but also emotional regulation, has been so challenging for our students. Many of them have been on remote learning for the last year and others are still missing more than a week of school because they have to quarantine. I will use the learning centers as an strategy to help my students achieve their learning goals and at the same time to help them build the sense of teamwork and community. The "Time for Kids" and "National Geographic" readers will help my students to read and learn about other cultures and countries, while they practice their reading in Spanish.
With these new books and math hands-on activities, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books and games that will allow them to read and learn independently at their own grade level.
As a class, we have been reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and they love the magic on it! Getting more books that interest them is the best way to increase their reading ability. These books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading.
