My students need five copies of "The Tale of Despereaux", nine copies and an audio copy of "The Miraculous Adventures of Edward Tulane", and we also need material for the math curriculum Multiplication and Division Grades 3-5.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third grade teacher working in a low income neighborhood school. The majority of my students are second language learners who need much support in language arts, reading and all academic content areas.
I currently work in a school district that does not provide materials that are challenging and interesting to my students. Another problem that I face in my classroom is the lack of appropriately leveled reading materials. This makes it difficult to reach the majority of my students who range in k-3 reading levels.
Recently my students started to show great interest in reading when I began reading "The Tale of Despereaux" as a read-a loud. Unfortunately we only own one copy. It becomes extremely complicated when the students want to read the book independently, they have to take turns sharing the book. Another issue that I face in my classroom is the lack of challenging hands on math activities. As a teacher I am supplementing the district mandated curriculum with a more engaging math program.
My students have shown great interest in the "Young Mathematicians at Work" kit. My school does not carry this material and I have seen such excitement when I turn over the investigating, problem solving and critical thinking to them. This is where your generous donation will help my students become better readers and mathematicians.
You will make it possible for my students to become life long readers and future mathematicians. Thank you you for your generous donations that will benefit all of my students.
