My Students
Imagine wanting to read a story that is above your reading level and there is no one to help you read it. With a CD player the students would be able to listen to the story on CD and follow along in a book. They would also be able to staple the many decodable books that are available to them.
All of my students are eager to learn and come to school prepared to learn.
They like to ask questions about what they are learning, and they like to tell me what they learned outside of the classroom. They come from all different backgrounds. About one fourth of my class speaks English as a second language. Many of my students do not have parents who can read to them at home.
With a mp3 capable music maker single cassette/CD player at my listening center, the students would be able to listen to stories on tape as they follow along in a book. This will allow them to enjoy stories that are at a harder level than they can read on their own and they will become better readers.
My students don't have many books at home. I am able to provide them with decodable books, but I can't staple that many books manually. An electric stapler would allow me to staple the books for my students who could then take them home and keep them at home to start a small library.
My Project
My third grade students love to read, but many of them are struggling with the basics of reading. To help them read, I have a set of 35 decodables for each of my students. The books start out easy and get harder as the year goes on. They will learn how to decode the words and progress to understanding what they read. Unfortunately, I have to put the books together before my students can read them. An electric stapler would help with the 2100 staples.
I also need a CD/tape player. This would allow my students to listen to stories that would otherwise be too hard for them to read. They would be able to read the books along with the CD. It would open up a whole new horizon to them. I am asking for an electric stapler 210 capacity 2" throat 16 sheet cap. putty to staple decodable books. I am also asking for a mp3 capable music maker with a single cassette/CD player for a listening station in my classroom.
I want my students to fall in love with reading and make it a lifetime habit.
My students need to be able to read independently by the fourth grade in order to have a chance to succeed in school and life. Too many of them do not have the resources at home to practice reading in order for them to get better at reading. Every child should be able to read for pleasure and for knowledge.
