My Students

I have 7 students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills, as well as communication and social skills.

We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.

We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, and group time to work on academic skills and writing. Students have storytime to work on comprehension, math, science, and art where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and follow picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social, and communication skills.

My Project

My class is entering our 4th week of virtual learning. My students and their parents are doing the best they can do during this difficult time of learning online. One thing that has greatly helped my class is having activities to send home. I sent some materials home to keep at home and others are in a rotation where they have the activity for 2 weeks and then get new activities to use.

Having materials at home helps me students to have hands on work to do while they are not on live class sessions since they cannot handle online work.

Most of my students need hand over hand support from their parents to complete activities. Having more accessible items that parents might not have to help as much with at home is very important to allow kids to be more independent and give parents a much deserved break from the strenuous task of virtual learning.

All of the activities in this project will help kids engage in learning materials but also work on fine motor skills. My students need many activities to work on strengthening fine motor skills to be able to start holding a marker or pencil and copy lines and shapes. The book, Marvelous Me, is one we will be reading in class and it will be great for them to have a copy of the book. They also have visuals to go along with the book at home already. These activities will help my students engage more in virtual learning.
