Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a variety of cultures, low income families and hard working middle class families, which therefore results with plenty of hardships for them on a daily basis. This being said though, they are incredibly resilient. They are dedicated students with wonderful attitudes, despite their disadvantages. The struggles they overcome are more than many adults can handle, but they do so with a smile on their face.

My students deserve a learning experience just as much as those who are privileged in a school that has private funding and a multitude of resources.

My Project

In a time where empathy is vital to learn about each other and our past I strive to cultivate a classroom that allows students to learn about the events and experiences that have shaped our history as a country and state. In my entire career of teaching, I have always been left wanting more from my students history textbooks. Too often are they extremely outdated and they often only tell one perspective and lack engagement.

Through this project, I want to encourage my students to hear about all the perspectives that make up our history as Americans.

The majority of my students come from a low socio-economic status and are English Language Learners. There is a huge struggle to identify with what is being taught in 4th/5th grade social studies curriculum.

These books will continue to enhance a print-rich classroom that I strive to create.

My goal is to blend History and Language Arts within my curriculum (for distance learning and in the classroom). Through these books and their various written perspectives it will increase cross cultural awareness and understanding. With the chapter books where the main character is a child or young person living through a specific historical event in US it will help my students identify, learn about, and engage with our past. I hope to not only promote a general knowledge of historical events, but a love of reading, and a validation of their perspective in life.
