My Project

My second grade students are starting to have a love for reading. We have a daily scheduled time to read chapter books. Students get excited when it is time for our chapter book read aloud, and verbally voice disappointment if we must skip it. Helping children become avid readers is one of the most important things you can do to help students succeed.

Introducing children to chapter books at an early age can nurture a love of reading.

Reading aloud also helps with listening skills, builds vocabulary, improves working memory, teaches life lessons through discussion, develops understanding for story elements, builds comprehension, engage students' critical thinking and analytical skills. In addition, when you read to students, you’re modeling how to read language. For instance, you pause at commas and periods, your voice inflection changes when you read questions or exclamations, and you model what to do when you come to a word you don’t know.

Reading aloud every day and having each student hold their own copy in their hands is powerful. It motivates even the reluctant readers to practice reading independently. My hope is for every student to leave my classroom with a love of reading.
