My students are the reason that I wake up every morning excited to go to work. I live for that ah-ha moment that the students get when something clicks after days of frustration. My second-grade students are full of excitement to learn and to teach other students.
I teach 23 book-loving, curious, and determined second graders.
In my classroom, I teach my students to love learning, by engaging them in meaningful lessons. My students love learning with books. They love to read a book, and then tell me all the information that they learned.
My Project
During my second year of teaching, I noticed that my second-grade students were not on grade level with writing. I looked online to find solutions on how I could increase their writing scores. As I was going through different websites, I noticed that many of them named books to help the students with the writing process and to know the different writing styles. I will be reading these picture books to my class when we discuss the different writing genres: opinion, narrative, and informative. I know that reading these fun picture books will keep the students engaged and enjoy writing. I am going to revolve my writing lessons around these books. The students will listen to the book, and then write using the topic that I give them. I can use these books year after year, and they would be a great resource for any grade.
During college, I learned that the best thing you can give your class is an amazing classroom community.
I want my students to feel welcomed and loved by every other student. I included books on how to feel empathy, kindness, and love towards each other. I have seen kids be so mean to each other, and I want to change this. I hope that I can be that one teacher that can help my students see good in each other and love everyone. I want to focus on having my classroom be their safe place and to always feel like they are wanted there. I am planning on reading these books the first complete weeks of school, so the students can gain friendships and learn how to deal with their and other's emotions. After reading these books, we will be doing activities to learn more about our classmates.
