Reading About The World

My students need a variety of leveled non-fiction books in our second grade classroom, so they may explore and learn about the world around them.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every morning my classroom library is buzzing with eager readers, hungry for knowledge gained by reading, especially non-fiction books. Students gather around baskets ready to "shop" for the books they will enjoy in class and at home on a weekly basis.

My class consists of a delightful group of 29 second graders, in a public school.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds, where books and libraries are not an integral part of their daily home life. They are always asking questions about the world, often wanting to read and learn more about non-fiction topics that interest them. Most times, it is difficult for them to do this in our classroom library, given the limited number of books at their just right reading level as they move beyond easy readers. Imagine the excitement when there is a wealth of brand-new higher level books with beautiful photographs and eye-catching illustrations that teach about the world.

My Project

Sets of non-fiction leveled books would provide students the opportunity to explore and learn about a multitude of topics that interests all children, including, weather, animals, jobs, and countries to name a few! Having a variety of books in the level L, M, and N baskets would be a tremendous help in the classroom.

The addition of these non-fiction books will enhance my students' learning experiences in my classroom.

New books will reignite their interest in reading about the world. They will also practice valuable skills in comprehension and vocabulary development with these informational texts.
