Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Scientists possess two character traits that make them good at what they do: They are inquisitive and observant. Because of their natural curiosity, children are good at being scientists. As teachers and parents, we get tired of hearing "Why?" all the time, but questioning things is how they learn.

My second grade students are budding scientists.

They attend their neighborhood school, which is culturally and economically diverse. Many students in my class speak a language other than English at home, and more than half of them receive free or reduced-price lunch. They come to school each day eager to learn, and they love to conduct science experiments, read about animals and nature, and watch the wonder of life as seeds grow into plants, tadpoles grow into frogs, and caterpillars transform into butterflies.

My Project

I have found that students love to read and write about science! They enjoy investigating things and drawing and writing about what they find out. To foster their love of science and their love of reading, I have requested more than 40 non-fiction books about different topics such as oceans, animals, and dinosaurs. My students will be able to use these books to gain factual information for their own knowledge so they can share knowledge with others by writing reports. To meet the second grade standards for science, my students must learn about animal life cycles, dinosaurs and their fossils, force and motion and plant life and how it is affected by different conditions. These books will help increase their knowledge about these topics.

Reading and writing about science is so important!

When students learn to read a book and use it to write factual information, they gain important skills that will help them throughout the rest of their schooling. Won't you help my budding research scientists by donating to this project? Your support will make a lot of difference! Thank you.
