My diverse group of fifth grade students have one foot firmly planted in childhood, as they tentatively place another into their futures. The more I can actively engage them, the more they see education as an important step in the paths they are taking. Junior high and high school are right around the corner, and we know sparking an interest early is important. Having the right materials to support their active learning and engagement is a critical part of that process.
My Project
Our 5th grade math curriculum outlines great reads for the students, but these titles are not part of our library. I want my students to have access to these titles in small guided reading groups of about seven students, where we can discuss the reading together.
These resources will give my students hands on experience with literature that enhances their understanding of math concepts taught in fifth grade.
When I engage students in several ways the concepts are more deeply rooted. Even better, sometimes I reach a student that needed it presented in a different way. Fifth grade math concepts are life long skills and making that connection is crucial.
