Help me give my students a non-fiction piece of literature that they can enjoy! This book talks about working class teens who acted as pirates to fight against the Nazis with any means possible. Historical and engaging.

My Students
My students are funny, kind and challenging learners. They come from many diverse backgrounds and cultures. All of my students read far below grade level. Many come from book barren homes. My students come to me with little motivation to read. They have been given less challenging, boring books for years. When able to make connections, my students can create amazing art. They have stories worth sharing. Literature helps them to find their voice as a writer. They are survivors.
My Project
Currently, the class books available aren't very engaging. I am hoping to spice up the core with a book that inspires our young to take action and support their beliefs.
Flowers in the Gutter is a story about working class teens who worked as pirates to overthrow the Nazi government.
It is written in an exciting manner which will allow the studying of a historical event engaging and memorable.
My students come from backgrounds where they are often encouraged to remain silent. This book will work to inspire them to take action and meet the requirements of common core.
