My Students
"Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift." ~Kate DiCamillo.
I want my students to read because they choose to! Reading is not something to be avoided. I believe a great story, shared with the world, will teach them that lesson!
My students are wonderful to work with!
They are a diverse group of students in terms of race, income, gender, and ability levels, all looking for a chance to learn! I have students who work at high levels and love to be challenged, down to students who need that extra push. We are an elementary school that is working hard to get our students reading, by any means necessary!
My Project
Individual copies of "Fish in a Tree" will provide each student with their own book. The students will follow along as I read the story aloud. They may take the books home, and read it with family, friends, or on their own.
They will participate in discussions about the story online and/or face to face with classes all over the country and world. They will share their thoughts on their blogs, post and add to discussions via Schoology, create innovative book reports using a variety of tech tools, and interact as we read with other classes via Skype and/or Google Hangout. I am looking forward to the critical thinking these collaborations will provoke!
Not only will we use the book for Global Read Aloud 2015, but we will also use "Fish in a Tree" during class to meet our English Language Arts standards. Students will practice reading fluently, using context clues to define words, analyze the author's purpose,etc.. This book will be used again and again during the school year.
The donation of "Fish in a Tree" will improve my classroom because it will allow my students the chance to own a book, with a great message, that they can then share with the world!
It will change my students' lives because if they are a struggling reader, they will not feel so alone. And if they aren't, they will develop empathy for the struggling reader. It will make our classroom community even stronger!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
