Reading a Book on a Nook

My students need a Nook E-reader to give them an innovative and engaging way to read along & listen to books in order to help increase their fluency and comprehension.

My Students

What would make for engaging reading instruction, while at the same time meeting students' individual needs? A Nook Color E-reader, that's what! Not only would the Nook give students access to volumes of books, but with the integrated wi-fi, student learning would expand worldwide.

I teach sixth, seventh, and eighth grade in a self-contained resource room for students with special needs.

Their disabilities include specific learning disability, cognitive delay, multiple disabilities, ADHD, and autism. Our school is in Ohio in a district where 99% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Although they have disabilities, they are surprisingly well-acquainted with technology. They love to use the computer, digital camera, my personal iPad, and anything else with buttons that they can manipulate. My students are good kids, but unfortunately, their circumstances often restrict their learning. They lack parental involvement, face disciplinary issues, and perform several grade levels below their peers.

My Project

My students lack the most important skill anyone can have - the ability to read. By having a Nook Color E-reader in my classroom, they gain access to the thousands of audiobooks available, and this will open a whole new world to my students. They will no longer be intimidated when reading in front of their peers. Using the Nook fosters student independence, while helping to increase their fluency and ability to comprehend. The Nook comes with features that help struggling readers: text-to-speech capability, text highlighting, font manipulation, and dictionary options, just to name a few. My students will have a sense of autonomy, fulfillment and satisfaction that should come with reading. An additional benefit is that apps can be downloaded to assess my students reading abilities, providing a way for immediate feedback on their progress. How awesome is that?

Donating a Nook Color E-reader is donating to my students' futures.

You will help to mold my students into cultured, well-read individuals ready to make a positive contribution to society. With their new-found skills, they will no longer be afraid to participate in meaningful discussions, inside and outside the classroom. Instead, they will have a plethora of stories, information and experiences to share with others.
