I have a classroom of 16 first graders that did not get the benefit of a complete year of Kindergarten due to COVID-19. These students began kindergarten with their peers just like any other group of kids. Then suddenly with over 3 months left of school, they were sent home. While their teachers and parents did their best to continue their education at home, it just wasn't the same.
Many of my students are starting the year at a deficit in their reading abilities due to the lost school time.
With the amount of reading we need to cover, these students could benefit from leveled readers, books on CDs, and other language arts tools. These students have a long ways to go, but we will be with them every step of the way.
My Project
Students need access to books on their reading level. With so many first graders reading at a lower level this year, we just do not have enough books to meet their needs. We need books to get them started, so we can help them become strong readers!
Even as a first year teacher, and a mom to six, I know how critical reading skills are for our children.
Help me, help them!! Let's get these kids to love reading now with a variety of books that they can read and enjoy!
