Reader's Workshop Classroom Library

My students need a diverse set of books to read from during Reader's Workshop as each works toward his or her goal of finishing 40 books during this school year.

My Students

When a book feels like TV it's a good book. My students are just discovering that reading can be this engaging. Through Readers' Workshop, each of the struggling readers in my class will read up to 40 books this year, but they need a diverse library in order to accomplish this goal.

My students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with substantial reading deficits, from all over Boston, in order to get a free education from our school.

We are a charter school that provides structure and fundamental academic preparation in order to get students to college. More specific to the students I work with daily, each comes with reading deficits of three to four grade levels. They bring joy and energy to class, but also histories of repeated academic failures. They struggle with reading and this affects every aspect of their life.

My Project

Current reading research clearly shows that students who are behind need to read a lot (increase their volume of reading), and have texts that are at their level. Additionally, student choice needs to factor into this equation. The course that I am currently teaching seeks to hit these aims. Students are reading quite a bit of diverse texts and getting individualized instruction in reading. And yet, our puny library is not supporting their new found joy in reading. Your donation will buy books for my students such as Black and White, How They Croaked and Eragon. This will give them texts to choose from, as they accelerate their reading growth.

My students need to become better readers.

My class is designed, based on research, in order to do this. I need your help to get leveled, diverse texts that each of my kids needs into my classroom.
