My Students
Most of my students have already had challenging life obstacles to overcome, despite only being in first grade. My students all come from low-income/high poverty neighborhoods and many of them have been affected by trauma early on in life. Despite all of this, my students walk into my classroom, eager to succeed, to learn, and most importantly, to be loved.
I teach at a Turnaround Network school in North Philadelphia where 100 percent of students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students come to school, not only to learn, but also to receive nourishment, love, and security. It is highly important for me to show them that they are valued and accepted. The environment I aim to create in my classroom is one where students are held to high academic expectations and guided in a warm and caring way.
My Project
The most important aspect of our school day in first grade is the literacy block. During this portion of the day, students are immersed in reading, whether it is listening to a read-aloud, reading independently, or sharing their reading with a partner.
A guided reading listening center would help my young readers grow their reading skills by listening to and following along with stories.
The achievement gap in low-income schools is especially distinct when it comes to reading levels. Incorporating as many literacy-rich activities into the classroom as possible helps to close this gap and give low-income students greater opportunities.
