My students need "reader's toolboxes" (3 ring pencil pouches) that contain sticky notes, pencils, pencil grips, erasable highlighters and reading trackers in order build excitement about reading/writing, to make connections to their reading and to build their use of reading strategies.
Reading can change the world of 3rd grade students. I want to "change their world" through reading and writing about reading. I co-teach two wonderful classes of 3rd graders that are in a very rural part of South Carolina. I teach reading and social studies to my homeroom and my partner teacher's homeroom. The majority of my students are from low socio-economic backgrounds and have limited experiences. My goal is to allow them to experience people, places and events through their reading.
Most of my students had a difficult time bringing in the normal school supplies because over 70% are on free or reduced lunch. I know their parents are struggling during this tough economic time so I was very hesitant to ask for anything extra. My students read and respond to their reading in many different ways. Having a "reader's toolbox" would help them to have all of their supplies right in their notebook.
In order for them to have a "reader's toolbox" right at their fingertips, they need a 3 ring pouch to store their supplies in their reader's notebook. In the pouch, they will keep the reading tracker and erasable highlighter to help during independent reading and the sticky notes, pencils and pencil grips to help when making connections or asking questions about their reading. If the supplies are right in their notebook, then they will have more time reading and less time walking to get what they need.
Your help will ensure my students have all the opportunities possible to read and practice the strategies needed to improve their reading. Not only will it help to make them better readers...being better readers will help them to LOVE reading!!
