it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Some of my 1st graders are struggling at the beginning reading stages, some are reading on grade level, and some are exceeding my expectations! I have to work with all these levels to build their skills. The best way to do that is to use leveled readers specifically targeted to their different level
My students experience many challenges, living in a urban in city environment.
90% of our children qualify for free or reduced lunch due to economic disadvantage. But, they are all making progress in their reading, be it little or much. They also all enjoy getting individual attention and help with reading in our small reading groups. These are times when I take 4 or 5 students who are reading on the same level and we read a book together. They get to take turns reading out loud, reading to me, reading to a partner, and then to take the book home and show off their new skills to family members. It's great practice and can really boost their reading confidence when the have books that are matched to their reading ability!
My Project
Each of my students need books that are not too hard and not too easy, but just right for them, to help build their skills. These book sets include a range of titles leveled by difficulty. Each title has 6 copies so each student in the group can use one. They also focus on sight words, word families, and real life science topics. My students will be so excited to read them successfully and then get to take them home to show off their skills for their family! Practice makes perfect and when children have opportunity to practice reading starting at the level where they can read successfully, it makes them want to read more. They start to believe in themselves, gain confidence, and ENJOY reading!
I have so many different reading levels in my classroom and I want to help them all become reading superstars!
The best way to do this is to read with them in small groups using books that are interesting and leveled just right to help them read successfully on their own. These book sets are just right for my 1st graders and will be a much needed tool to build their reading skills and give them the strong foundation that they need to succeed. We would really appreciate any donation you can give.
