There are many challenges facing my students but the main one is their reading ability and I am hoping with a guided reading center I will be able to meet with every child in a small group or individually to help them meet their goals.
The students of today face enough challenges in their lives and reading should not be one of them.
Our public school is located in NY. It is a Title I school and has a large minority student population from predominantly low income families. Our students face adult illiteracy, transience, and single parent families. These children are just beginning their journey into reading and I am hoping with this guided reading center I will be able to help the struggling children as well as the children who are beginning to read on their own. Small group instruction also helps children who have a hard time focusing in larger groups. Children are able to focus better in smaller groups which gives them the confidence they need to succeed.
My Project
I am hoping to set up a guided reading center in my classroom. I would like to have one kidney shaped table so that the children will be able to sit around the table so I can help everyone in the group at the same time. I also would like one magnetic whiteboard so that I can instruct the children during my lesson. I would also like a box of dry erase markers to use during the lesson. We will be able to read books as a group and I will be able to work individually with students if they need the extra help. By working in small groups I will be reaching every child whether they are struggling or beginning to read on their own. Small group instruction also helps children who have a hard time focusing in larger groups. Children are able to focus better in smaller groups which gives them the confidence they need to succeed.
This guided reading center is very important to a classroom because it helps all children in the class to learn.
