My students need a listening station to listen to fluent reading frequently to help improve their own reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In my classroom we love books, and the students are always excited when it is time for read-alouds. Having a listening station in our classroom would allow for extra opportunities to hear quality literature daily. This would help greatly improve their own reading abilities.
My students are mainly English language learners, and many are from low income families.
They don't have a lot of books at home, and their opportunities to hear fluent reading in English are limited to time spent in the classroom and any opportunities they have to visit the public library story times with their families. They always strive to do their best and love coming to school.
The school district is the second largest in Illinois and has definitely been struggling due to all the recent cutbacks. Class sizes have grown and extra money for supplies has shrunk. Purchasing a listening station would definitely be something I would have to do myself. It is a little too costly, yet it would be so beneficial to my students.
My Project
With this listening station my students will have extra opportunities during the school day to hear fluent reading in English. Hearing fluent reading frequently is one important part of learning how to read themselves. This listening station will become part of their daily routine during reading workshop. Each group will have the opportunity to listen to a story and then write (or draw) a short response to the story. Hearing as many stories as possible is so important for developing their love for reading and the opportunity to make connections between stories. The more stories they hear the more they want to hear. This plants the seed of a voracious reader.
Reading is an essential part of every subject in school.
Helping these students develop a solid foundation in reading will help them be successful in all their schooling which lies ahead. It is much harder to catch-up later in their schooling than it is to simply start off strong from the beginning. As first graders, they are so eager to learn, and it is so important for them to have all the opportunities they deserve.
