Readers Run This Place! Building a Lifelong Reading Culture

My students need books that will inspire, instruct, and hook them on reading for lifelong learning.

My Students

Did you have books in your home when you were growing up? Most of my students don't. Seven years ago I helped found this school to meet some of the challenges these kids face in life and providing books has proved to be one of the BEST ways we can hook these kids on reading and LIFE LONG LEARNING!

My students are GREAT!

They also have very few resources. More than 90% of my students qualify for free lunch and have historically been undeserved educationally. They work hard but they are behind, with the average reading level of incoming 9th graders being at the 6th or 7th grade level. They come from families that mean well but do not have enough disposable income to worry about literacy when they need to worry about getting food on the table first.

My Project

Next year we start reading for 30 minutes a day school-wide! With these resources I will expand my classroom library so that each of my students can better find the perfect book for their reading level and interests. I have selected some classics, some modern techno-novels, an engaging Latino history book, and the BEST book for teens about the real-world food choices that they face. I will add these to my existing classroom library where the kids currently have to compete to check-out books because we don't have enough! Don't worry about it being a classroom library - any student in the school can come in and check out a book - we just keep them there so that each "librarian" really knows the books!

Most of what I know I taught myself - using books.

In college my reading skills directly impacted my success. My students face a MUCH BRIGHTER FUTURE if we can get them hooked on books and reading. Every aspect of employment and life becomes easier if you can read and comprehend written text and the ONLY way to get really good is by reading. Please help me provide a variety of opportunities to reach these kids and show them the joy of a really good book.
