This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the proud teacher of a 12:1 self-contained class. My students come with learning, language, and behavioral challenges. This year, a 12:1 class was created for grades 3 and 4. Our school is no longer a focus school due to the dedicated teachers in our school and students that are scoring higher on state tests. However, no longer being a focus school means less funding. We need to vamp up our library with engaging books for my students.

I want to give my students a love of reading that they will carry with them throughout their lives.

I teach in one of the highest poverty areas in our nation. Despite their economic hardships, my students come to school eager and ready to learn. It is crucial that my children get the best education possible in order to break this cycle of poverty.

My Project

I made a promise to my students this year that they would develop a love of reading. With the combination of the appropriate level and a book of interest, I maintain that it's impossible to dislike reading.

Reading can be the best escape for many of my students.

I have students in foster care and some students that have difficult home lives. It warms my heart when I read a book to my kids and they ask if they could take the book home. We started out a little shaky, however, as I add books according to their interests to our library, I'm seeing a love of reading developing.

A 3rd and 4th grade 12:1 class is new to our school. Consequently, we've been collecting books from teachers, tag sales, and libraries. I've noticed that my students are gravitating toward certain books. My goal is to build a library where my students are reading book after book after book.
